Today’s Friday photo tip is a momtography tip for all you parents who want to take better pictures of YOU with your kids. Crazy notion for some of you right? YOU actually being in the picture? ha. I know, I was like that for awhile too, but I’m trying harder to actually put myself in a few pictures with my kids. Looking back your kids will LOVE to see you with your 90′s hair cuddling their cute baby self :)  I even think it’s funny to look back at pictures of ME with my first baby — and she’s only 6 so it wasn’t that long ago (but boy oh boy did I look young and clueless … cause I was :))

So my tip of the day:  Get up close and on the same level as your kids for pictures! Sure, this isn’t a hard fast rule — but 9 times out of 10 (yes that was scientifically determined ;)) the picture will look MUCH BETTER if you get on the same level as your child.

So 1) GET UP CLOSE. This is how you show the love. This is how you show the relationship. If it’s a baby you’re holding, don’t just hold her on your hip! Pull her in close and touch cheeks! Taking pictures with a toddler? Swing them up on your shoulders or wrap your arms around them for a big hug. Just get close :)

2) Get on the same level! If it’s a teen you’re taking a picture with this isn’t hard … you’re probably already the same height :) BUT, if you’re with toddlers then it’s time to squat down or sit down — getting on their level also helps show the relationship and it is more pleasing to look at. Here’s two snapshots  my hubby took a few weeks ago (see? I really am doing better about getting in the picture!)

And then compare it to this one where I just stood next to my son. Not only was most of his body chopped off  but the relationship and the focal point of the picture isn’t as strong. Sure my hunksband could have made this a vertical picture and captured more of Tru, but still, compared to our first shot where we’re all together, close and on the same level, this picture is much weaker (though the background is GORGEOUS isn’t it?!)

So my Friday tip to all you parents? GET CLOSE and GET ON THE SAME LEVEL. Give it a try this weekend! I hope you have something fabulous planned :)
